My first wearable object. I modified it slightly at the neckband as the directions left me with two back-to-back purls in the ribbing. I also made the bottom slightly longer than called for just to give me a little more coverage.

World War II Red Cross Socks

Pattern: Red Cross with my own adjustments

Yarn: Wool blend from yarn kit purchased from Red Cross; less than one skein

Needes: Size 2 Circular Needles
First Sock Completed: December 16, 2006

Second Sock Completed: December 18, 2006

I made these socks for my dad for Christmas. He's a history buff and teacher, concentrating on World War II, so this seemed appropriate. Kits like the one I ordered were given to women wishing to knit socks for soldiers at war. The Red Cross reissued the kits this year. The tin included the yarn, instructions, plastic knittng needles and a darning needle. I followed the pattern somewhat, but did venture out on my own following a standard sock pattern I learned in making my first pair. I also used the Magic Loop Method and used size 2 needles instead of the size 3 double pointed ones provided in the kit.

Raindrop Lace Socks

aka Chocolate Covered Cherry Socks

Pattern: Fiber Trends Raindrop Lace Socks (An adaptation of Swiss Fan Stitch from Barbara Walker's Second Treasury.)

Yarn: Fly Super Sport 3-ply Hand-dyed Merino Wool (Ruby Redmond, which I renamed Chocolate Covered Cherries) One Skein
Needles: Size 2 Circular Needles (Magic Loop Method)

First Sock Completed: December 28, 2006

Second Sock Completed: New Year's Eve 2006

Notes: I chose to use a smaller needle as I chose a yarn which was a little more bulky than the Lorna's Laces shown in the pattern. I also chose to reduce the number of heel rows to better fit my foot. Love, love, love this yarn. It was so very soft and the colors so very deep.

I'd love to see what the Matador looks like on a person. A blurry, faceless, entirely anonymous person.

The color is great.

i am looking for a particular pattern, I remember knitting it several years ago and was planning on taking the pattern out for this christmas but cant seem to find it. maybe you could be of some help? i remember using size 13 and size 15 needles and i remember using rowan big wool, but i dont know if that was the wool that the pattern called for... it was a very simple pattern. any help would be appreciated. thanks

Thanks for the reference to the "Knitter's Handy Guide" book. It's exactly what I'm looking for! I have some forgeous wool but no mitten pattern to go with it...the gauge was wrong for the pattern I wanted to use.

Thanks!
