I opted not to post last night following Rock Star: INXS for two reasons. First of all, I know that for some of you it airs much later than it does here in fair Kentucky. Secondly, I wasn't sure how to spell most of the words that came to mind.
Now that I have had eight hours of poor sleep (I am sick) and a chance to reflect, I am ready to give my assessment, for what it's worth.
Whereas I am not a fan of JD's personally, I must admit he is talented. He is fun to watch and he does exude sex appeal. Was he a good choice for "our band. . . INXS"? Probably. When I stop to look at it clearly (and not through tear-stained, Marty-loving eyes) I realize that the entire INXS band lacks any sort of sex appeal or innate coolness. (Example: Pengilly.)
Let's face it, they weren't all that cool originally, Michael Hutchence (whose name has yet to be mentioned on the show) gave them their appeal. He was the band. They need someone that strong, that sexy and that entertaining on stage.
Is Marty sexy? Yes, but in that "teenage girls are gonna swoon and buy albums" way? Probably not. I understand their decision.
And now Marty is free to pursue a more lucrative and creative career. He's free of a band, he's on his own, to sing about trees and dance any way he chooses.
The moment JD broke into "What You Need", I knew they had handed him the competition on a silver platter. It's by far their most known song and his chance to shine with the band.
So, Marty, it's just you and me up in the trees and I feel certain the forest will give us the answers. After all it's you and I up in the sky. . . a combination for disaster.
Here's to you Marty. Here's to your conductor dancing. Here's to your eyeliner. Here's to your intense stares. Trust me, I probably won't be picking up the next INXS albums, but I will certainly hunt down yours. You can be my creep any time.
