Speaking of lip gloss

This morning I noticed that my lips were horribly chapped. I started digging around and realized that I didn't have any Chapstick around. Remembering that I had stowed the two tubes of Chronicles of Narnia Chapstick in the botton of my bag, I thought I was saved. I gazed at the two tubes and recalled that one was "wild apple" flavor and the other "magical melon". There was a time when I wouldn't have minded scented lips, but I just think that I am past that point now. Realizing I could either live with nasty, flaky lips all day or smell like a fruit, I sucked it up and donned the apple flavor and was instantly transported to the year I turned 11 years old.

That's the same year I had a birthday slumber party at my house. It was a Grease-themed event and we re-enacted the entire movie thanks to one of my gifts: the soundtrack album to Grease that we played on the hi-fi.

But, I digress, it was also the same year that I discovered Bonnie Belle scented lip glosses. They were generally packaged in multiples in long tubes featuring a variety of "flavors" including grape, strawberry and my favorite: bubble gum. Each year at Christmas I'd get a variety pack of these in my stocking.

Every Saturday morning, I'd get up, spritz myself with Love's Baby Soft, put my ribbon-braided barrettes in my hair, and slather waxy Bonnie Belle bubble gum flavored chapstick on my lips. Then my mom would drop me and a friend off at the local skating rink where I'd put on my white skates with green wheels and large burgundy pom-poms. I'd hit the rink and think I was the coolest girl there and I am certain I was, as did every other Love's Baby Soft-bubble gum smelling 12-year-old there.

I was a Love's Baby girl and strawberry Bonnie Bell girl. Did you ever wear Tinkerbell? I think it was nail polish and lip gloss.

I was a Bonnie Belle 10-0-6 skin cleanser junkie. I still remember the smell. And at Christmas they added a cardboard Santa to the top of the bottle and hung a sack of Bonnie Belle goodies from the neck. I LOVED opening that sack to see what was inside!
