Recently I was digging around in our basement. Actually I was on a quest to clear out some stuff. My obsessive-compulsive syndrome is in full force each time I walk down those steps. Junk is everywhere down there and it's so musty and dusty. UGH, it's enough to drive a girl mad, or at least to continually sweep kitty hair tumbleweeds, dust shelves of Christmas decorations and organize paint can after paint can.
Anyway, back to what I was saying. During this little scavenger hunt, I found the box above. I had remembered us discovering it when Cynical first moved into the place. I was intrigued by it as it fueled my fascination with all things container-esque.
This time I didn't tuck it back on the shelf, I decided to bring it upstairs with me and uncover its intended purpose and beauty. I began by cleaning it and oiling the wood. As I did so I wondered who had made this cute little trough and why did they leave it behind. Did it once hold woodworking tools used to make small toys. Did it store linen napkins. Maybe the owner used it to organize recipes or coupons.
Now I am on a new quest: one in which I find a use for my little find. I keep moving it around the house finding new utilities for it. Initially it held small balls of yarn. Then it ventured to the living room where two small felted birds made their nest. It held the mail for a few days. Now it sits on the trunk in front of the window in our living room. I am not sure why I placed it there. Maybe soon it will hold cards and letters from friends far away. It could be the perfect site size for my Anne of Green Gables books or shoe shining brushes and wax. Who knows, for now, it will continue its journey around the house until it finds a true home.

It reminds me of a thing I once saw on an antique show. The item there was a bread board used to hold bread dough for raising. It was about 5 or 6 boxes like that one all in a row. Just a thought.
It's beautiful!
Yeah that sounds like a good idea...how's about baking us all some bread!!!! *drooling like one of Pavlov's dogs*
Actually, Kim, I've been getting the notion I want to bake some bread. My grandma was one of those great bread bakers.
Ragged, you know my vote is for yarn storage. I've got enough stash I could change it out for the different seasons, holidays, and what-have-you.
Ragged, it's so beautifully simple. Sort of Shaker-esque.
I'm fond of containers as art. I say, instead of putting things in it, just display it. Its simplicity is beautiful.
