A shot in the arm

I went for an annual exam today. (Let's pause for a moment of relief it's over.) It's all good, except my doctor mentioned not once. . . not twice, but three times that I should get a flu shot.

It's something I never have really considered, but now she's got me wondering.

Do any of you get a flu shot? Why or why not?

I did when I worked at the doctor's office. I think Rudy does, and with Yin's issues she does.

Is that anyhelp?

I don't usually and that's because I don't fall into the categories they list for those who should get one....so, I'll be a spreader :(

I don't. None of us do. I have a few reasons. 1) I'm kind of afraid I'll get sick from it and then it won't even be the right kind to keep me from getting the flu so I'll just get it twice. And 2) like Kissed Knitter, I figure there are others who need it more. Babies and the elderly and whatnot. And finally 3)I'm bad-ass.

Unfortunately, I never get sick. (and I say unfortunately b/c sometimes those with a strong work ethic (moi) want to have an excuse to stay home from work.) I also keep hearing that the strain they innoculate you against may not be the one you get. What is it the dr. "isn't" telling you??? Hummm...

I get one every year and have for the last several years. They recommend it for Health Care Professionals. :)

I don't. The year I got a flu shot was the sickest winter I ever spent.

They offer it free at the med center where I work, so I get it every year. One year there was a shortage and old people and babies were the only ones and I didn't then. But, otherwise, yeah.

I've only had the flu once back in high school, so it may or may not have something to do with it.

I have a flu shot every year (except the year mentioned by Joy above). Mostly because I hate having the flu. And I work in a high traffic office, so I'm in contact with a lot of people (and therefore a lot of germs) all the time. I've never been sick after having it. I've just had a sore arm for a day or two.

I get one every year. So far, I've never gotten even the least bit sick. My arm was a little sore for a couple of days, but that was it.

I'm around the gkids alot, and I don't want to give them anything, or catch anything they may have to share.

My mom was born two years after the huge flu epidemic that swept the country in 1918. Her brother who was two then died from it, and her mother was so "low in the bed" she couldn't go to his funeral.

Even though it may not be the right strain that we are innoculated against, I prefer to think that I am doing something preventative.

My kids and gkids don't get it. I wish they would.

I never have, but many of my co-workers have and do. But, many seem to get sick, really sick, afterwards. Isn't that the opposite of the intended effect? It's been three years now that I've spent flu season working with high school kids and I have not yet gotten sick, besides the occassional cold or sinus infection. Plus, like Emily, I'm bad-ass.

I've gotten them every year at my current job since they're free (who knows what's floating around college campuses, eek). Neither me nor any of my coworkers have gotten sick afterward.

I get sick a lot: 2-3 times a season. And it hits me pretty hard. 2 years ago, I got pneumonia and swore that I would start getting the flu shot. But I still haven't. I also know people who have gotten the shot and still got very sick afterwards, so I wonder what the use would be to me. I should just try it one year and see what happens. But I don't like drugs and I don't like needles. Yet I've already been sick twice since September.
Too bad we don't live nearby and we can go in together.
