I went ice skating tonight. I hadn't been in over 10 years. . . on my first date with Cynical, in fact. I had worried about going, envisioning myself hitting the ice with a thud, feet above me, unable to get back up, so I would just scamper about on all fours like a crab. (This rink is unique. It is assembled along what is normally a huge patio area overlooking the Ohio River, with a lighted bridge in the background. A huge movie screen is placed at one end where they play old cartoons and beautiful snow scenes complete with music.)
Instead of revealing my true lack of balance, after a few very nervous rounds, I found my stride and managed to pick up some speed. But, I am not here to talk about my lame sense of balance and fear of being taken out by small children pushing milk crates.
I want to tell you about probably the most peaceful sight of the season for me. As we were resting on a bench as the zamboni cleaned off the rink, I notice an entire group of nuns, in full nun-like attire including habits and long brown skirts, donning skates. Most of them were wearing dark gray rental ones just like ours. However, one very tall and statuesque one had beautiful bright white ones complete with fancy blade guards.
Whenever we were allowed back on the rink, I noticed she headed to the center where she began to twirl, spin and glide. It's as if she floated along the ice. She had the most incredible smile on her face. It was ethereal. I couldn't take my eyes off her. I was envious as she moved along so sure of herself, so caught up in the joy of the moment. She was so very at peace on the ice. That's my new escape: remembering her peace and joy as she skated along the ice.

You've given an amazing visual. I can only imagine how cool that must have looked in person.
You describe it so well. It's like a movie.
Sounds absolutely lovely!!
This is such a cool story!!!
I'm glad that you were brave enough to put on skates and try the ice. It so much fun as long as you remain upright! : .)
Sounds intriguing!
I actually pictured it!
When I was a girl the Olympic Skater Sonja Henie was one of my favorite movie stars...I'd love to see one of her movies again. There's nothing like beautiful skating!
