21: Year of the Rat

Our community is reading "The Joy Luck Club" as part of The Big Read. Organizers felt it only appropriate to hold the kick-off in conjunction with the Chinese New Year. On Saturday I ventured out with my mom and a friend of hers, both are reading along as well, and we attended festivities at the local arts center. We dined on Chinese food, attempted a bit of oragami and watched as performers danced and sang. It was a beautiful day and a great opportunity to appreciate culture, diversity, tradition and heritage.

Above is a shot of the dragon, without his wranglers, which was used in a storytelling presentation; a little girl, hair in a bun is silhoueted behind an umbrella during one of the dance presentations.

I am a year of the Rat kid. Even though 1973 is something else. I was born before the end of the lunar new year.

So I am a rat...

Hush it Peanut gallery!

I love the Chinese umbrellas...always have. My cousin's son is getting married in August...a Buddist wedding. It will be outside at 2pm...very hot, so I thought about getting some Chinese paper umbrella's to keep us shaded. The plus side is that I'd get to keep them for decorations when I got home!
The photos and your description are wonderful.

I love that book. It's very relatable.
