Picture Book

After much ado and much thought we made a very, very big decision; we ordered a digital camera.

Yes, it’s true, the dear, dear folks at Amazon will soon be delivering the newest addition to our family in five to 10 working days. We are ecstatic and are preparing for her arrival as I speak (or type). We have big plans for her, so I can only hope she is up for the challenge. She has quite a legacy to continue. (Note: all precious belongings will be identified as "shes" as it should be.)

As we typed in our credit card numbers and sold our soul once again at Amazon.com, I started thinking about this being a new chapter in my photographic life. In my own time machine, I was taken back long, long ago when my father drove me to K-Mart and with my beloved, hard-earned babysitting cashola, I purchased a small 110 camera and three rolls of film.

My brother, Knight P, and I could hardly contain our excitement and my dad even took a photo of us there at K-Mart to commemorate the occasion (I suspect much like our Halloween candy, he just wanted the first chance to try it.) The photo came back 3.5 x 5 with rounded edges in a matte finish. I was so proud. I will try to dig that up and post it here. It’s photographic history, I tell you. My dear, dear little 110 sits quietly in my hope chest now, with a hair band holding her together as she took a fall once and broke her back. I am assuming she’s still operable, but I haven’t tried to find film to fuel her.

Since then I have gone through a few other cameras, first a Canon Powershot that I literally wore out after borrowing Cool’s Snappy Q and falling in love with it. I have gone through a few more and most recently I have been in love with my Minolta SLR. However, I still remember that little 110 camera. She got this all started and served me well on family camping trips, at Sweet 16 parties and even during homecoming dances.

We’ve made the leap to the digital age and I am very excited, but I seriously doubt that I will be as happy to open the amazon.com package as I was that of my little generic first camera.

I hear ya. I really, really wanted the Canon Rebel, but alas, I couldn't justify it on our budget. Aaaah, it would be pure heaven.

I will have to settle for my little slice of heaven.
