Guys do make passes at girls who wear glasses. . . don't they?

For the past six or so years I have had the same pair of glasses. When I first got them, I thought they made me look studious. They provided just enough personality without screaming, "Hey, look at me!"

But now the time has come for an update. My vision hasn't changed that much, but enough so that I need new lenses and hence new glasses. And therein lies the problem. I hate, hate, hate picking out glasses. It's such a commitment. It's such a decision. I mean, I have to live with these for the next six or so years. . . I'd better like them.

One moment of fashion weakness and I am looking like my fifth grade teacher, sporting glasses better left in the 80s along with stirrup pants, neon colored shirts and spiked bangs.

I wear contacts all day; and don my spectacles only at night or when my eyes just need a break. So, the situation isn't quite as dire as it might be for 24-hour wearer.

Last week I conned Kissed Knitter into meeting me for lunch and a little eyewear fashion show. I dangled lunch in front of her, asking her to meet me at the eye shoppe and then proceeded to torture her as I tried on 35 pair of glasses, none of which suited me. And, the ever-so-patient Kissed Knitters provided great advice with such diplomacy and grace. And still I left without a pair. Cynical, a tad more conservative than I, had suggested I find something a little more conservative, I suspect that jaded the hunt. . . what does conservative mean?

On Friday night, while picking up contacts at yet another optical shoppe, I decided to try on glasses while I waited my turn. And I found several that I liked. Problem is. . . I'd never purchase them without first having someone "check" me. So, the hunt is more complicated than ever.

And there's the age thing: I don't want something too young, but I am not ready to go too plain and aged either.

I am wondering now if eye surgery might be less painful.

I got new glasses probably a couple years ago now and I don't wear them. Because I don't like them. It's so hard to pick out the right ones. I feel your stress over this one.

I had plain old "conservative" wire rims for years. It seemed to be what everyone expected of me.

Then, on a whim, I tried on the glasses I have now...a slight upturn at the outside corners, little crystals accentuating the upturn, and what I think is a beautiful coppery color instead of the pewter gray I had before.

I was so surprised at how much I liked something I would have before thought of as too flamboyant. And I actually get lots of compliments on them.

Now when I have laser surgery suggested to me, I object strongly because I don't want to give up my glasses!

Don't give up yet. Try something you never thought you'd like, something unexpected. You might be pleasantly surprised.

ROTFLOL! About the eye surgery comment and then was Cynical just wrote. :D
I've been 'conservative/classic' all my life when it comes to eye ware, but i broke free this year. I'm exactly like you, wear contacts 90% of the time, only change glasses every 6+ years. I went with something fun, completely different, something i love, and I don't care if in 4 years I'm not grooving with my glasses anymore because No One sees me in them except my husband and the occasional overnight guest. Besides, look how fast the past 6 years have gone; within a few blinks of the eye you'll be buying a new pair. And heck, if you have eye care insurance, then you wouldn't even 'have' to wait the 6 years...splurge and get a new pair in 4 years.

I thought she picked out some classic/conservative, yet fun and different styles....she just needs to take the plunge. Unfortunately, I know what she's going through. I've had the same oookie wire frames for the last four years and they work for me cause I can see the tv and look out from the bottom of them to read. Cause now I need bifocals.
