They fought the frost and the frost lost
I had feared the unpredictable late freezes this spring claimed our hydrangea bush this year. However, it seems it was much more resilient than we ever thought. I took over 60 photos of them today. Each one captivates me.

Sharing the bounty
One of the many budding irises in our back yard. All of the plants in our yard were given to us out the gardens of our friends and family. I like the idea of "recycling" plants from their yards and putting it all together to make a garden of our own. It has a sense of community to me.

Short week ahead
Monday morning always sneaks up on me. I suspect it's because it doesn't take me long to fall into "weekend mode" and somehow I start feeling as if my leisurely days will last forever, but come Monday morning, there is always a rude awakening.
Our weekend was busy, but good, full of projects we were trying to squeeze in before the sunny sky turned to a rainy one. Mulching and mowing. Sweeping and garden planning. My first pedicure of the season. Errand running. Grocery shopping. A walk around the neighborhood. The admiring of spring blossoms and blooms. Lots and lots of laundry. Some knitting. Some reading. Some movie watching.
The good news is that this is a short week for us. Both Cynical and I have Friday off. Being as it's Spring Break in most of fair Kentucky, the phone is ringing a lot less and it's eerily quiet at work. That also means no evening meetings or volunteer activities. The week, it seems, is mine.
And in even better news, we have managed to plan a little visit from Pilot and Needlefingers. They'll be coming Friday and staying Sunday until we all must part to spend Easter with our families. I have been busy printing out geocaching information, figuring out some movies for us to see and planning a menu. I suspect that colder temperatures might impede much caching, but it's worth a shot.

Warmer weather rituals
Just about this time each year we begin a series of rituals which prepare us for the warmer weather. This weekend marked the start of that series. It begins very subtly at Chez Ragged. I pull out a pair of sandals to wear whenever I take the garbage out. We start talking about a potential tomato garden. I begin to notice daffodils blooming along the fence row. We open the window for a few hours in the afternoon. We remove the extra blanket from the bed.
And then we move from baby steps to bigger leaps. We check out the lawn mower, change the oil in the weedeater, mow for the first time. . .
This weekend centered around the embrace of impending summer and spring. Planning for a tomato garden turned to actual preparation of the planting bed. We began trimming low-lying limbs and dusting off of our lawn chairs.
Perhaps one of the biggest markers in the change of season here is the status of the grill. Late last fall it was tucked away in the garage where it waited anxiously until a few warm days gave us the courage to bring her out again. On Saturday our little grill saw the light of day. She got a good cleaning. We surprised her with new briquettes and christened her with veggie burgers. Today we put her to the test again, this time inviting her to cook marinated Portabella mushrooms.
Another important mile marker in the preparation stage is the rotation from bulky, warm sweaters, to short sleeved t-shirts and cotton blouses. It's a bit of a chore, given the limited closet and drawer space we have. At first just a few brighter colors and shorter sleeves appear in the laundry and before I know it, I am pulling out a tub of shirts, gently hanging them on hangers, stowing them in drawers. In the meantime sandals start appearing beneath the bed.
Today we did dust off the lawn chairs; me knitting as Cynical read. Freddie accompanied us, crawling into our laps and sunning himself, hungry for attention. We even took a walk around our neighborhood, spying the true homes of some other kitty visitors, admiring the Cherry, Tulip Poplar and Bradford Pear trees all in full bloom; smiling as others enjoyed the 80-plus temperatures by getting good use out of their porch swings.
And little by little, we start to emerge from winter, just as my daylillies will soon open up.
Above is a shot of a little experiment: our first grilling of mushrooms on the grill. Basted with a little mixture of extra virgin olive oil, balsalmic vinegar and a little basil, we tossed them on the grill and dined on them this evening. Not bad for a little of this and a little of that.

Let the sun shine in, face it with a grin
Yesterday began with a bang: thunderstorms and rain, flooding and blackness. However, the sun eventually peeked out from behind the clouds and showed us what it was all about: spring has sprung. I hadn't taken a moment to even consider the blooming trees and daffodils lately, we've just been too busy. However, yesterday as the sun shone illuminating the back yard, I spied the blossoms on one of our trees and several of our lillies poking through the ground.
It's amazing how blue the sky can be after such a torrential downpour. Well worth the suspense, I suppose.
