The great appliance debate of 2008

At Chez Ragged a big debate is brewing and consuming its inhabitants. You see, upon our move, we must purchase new appliances. Fridge was easy, we needed counter depth; I conceded my position on ice/water dispenser in exchange for clear crisper bins.

However, we are still stuck on the standard washer/dryer combo vs. the front loaders. I know they are supposed to be more efficient. I know they look verra cool. However, I am just not seeing enough energy/water savings to justify the price and it irks me that the bases come separately.

What are your thoughts? Weigh in on the Great Appliance Debate of 2008.

We have front loaders without the bases. Michael's parents have the bases and I covet them. I really like our front loaders and they're very efficient. However they're also the first brand new washer/dryer that I've ever tried so take my word with a grain of salt. I'm just impressed that things dry in one cycle.

I think the front loaders are cool looking also. One thing that is neat about Rudy & Brandos are they are stack able and take up less space. Also with one being on top of the other there is less bending over to put in a pull out laundry. I am sure you will make the right choice.

I must admit that I love my front laoders. The main reason being that they stack like Pilot said, and now I have alot more room. The washer is a little low- but I sit on a little bench and stain treat all of Yin's clothes anyway. So for all the rest of the loads we just throw them in.

My favorite is the dryer. I LOVE that my clothes are dried most times in 40-45 minutes. Sure beats the old dryer time of 90 minutes. They use very little water not that I have noticed a difference on the bill with Rudy filling our Pond everyother day. ;)

All in all it was well worth the money on a job that I despise cause I can do... cough cough about 12-14 loads in a day if the need arises. Which it does... occassionally :)

I talked to my parents that have a set. They said the way it works is the more clothes you put into your load, the cleaner they get. If you only have a few items they won't get as clean. Also, they said it uses quite a bit less water than a regular washer. Also, you can get the same type washer and dryer in top loading design. They didn't think the dryer really made that much difference. They swore by the washer though.

I would listen to Cynical. Whatever he wants, I would make every effort to comply. He seems like a great guy. So smart, witty, and those looks! You are so so lucky.

My husband is an appliance repairman, and he has a good laugh at all the hype surrounding the front loader washers. He says they are overpriced and no more efficient than the top loading models.

He says...don't waste your money just because they look pretty.
